PS Analytical designs and supplies analytical instruments for total arsenic determination as well as arsenic speciation analysis in a wide variety of sample types, including liquids, solids and gases. Their flagship laboratory analyser — the Millennium Excalibur — routinely measures arsenic down to ppt-level concentrations, making it ideal for environmental waters (drinking water, wastewater, groundwater, seawater), soils, sludges, industrial streams and even biological samples.
In addition to total arsenic measurement, PS Analytical supports arsenic speciation, where individual chemical forms (such as arsenite, arsenate and other organic or inorganic species) are separated — typically using HPLC — and measured with high sensitivity, because toxicity and environmental behavior can vary significantly between species.
For online real-time monitoring of arsenic in water courses or process streams, PS Analytical also offers dedicated online arsenic analyser systems that provide continuous determination without manual sampling.
As the toxicity of certain elements depends very heavily on their physico-chemical form it is important to be able to monitor levels of the individual species. Speciation of arsenic compounds is achieved by separating the compounds using HPLC and measuring the individual species with the PS Analytical Millennium Excalibur. The case of arsenic in rice referred to above is a good example.
P S Analytical’s Millennium Excalibur has been used by researchers worldwide to carry out Arsenic (As) speciation studies as its excellent sensitivity, linearity and selectivity make it an ideal tool for this work
Total arsenic concentration alone doesn’t reveal the chemical form of arsenic, yet toxicity varies dramatically between species such as inorganic arsenite (As III), arsenate (As V) and organic forms like MMA and DMA. PS Analytical’s arsenic speciation systems integrate chromatographic separation (e.g., HPLC) with hydride generation and AFS detection to separate and quantify individual arsenic species in a single analysis run.
By enabling labs to distinguish between more toxic inorganic arsenic species and less harmful organic compounds, speciation tools support health risk assessments, regulatory compliance and environmental research. The modular interfaces also allow easy expansion or aion, making speciation workflows efficient and adaptable to evolving laboratory needs.
